I am still confused on what is going on with Earth Scouts? Is there still an existing Earth Scouts and this group is breaking off from it or as of now the Earth Scouts is defunct. What happened to the existing badges, my kids have earned their human rights badge and will soon earn the Economic justice, is there no way to order these anymore?
Hi Dana & Kelly
'Earth Scouts' is owned by ECUS and we cannot use that name for this network any longer. We are going forward with Plan B which is to rebrand and recreate new badges and resources under a new name but it will still be a scouting program. So we are going to roll out new badges for all the 4 pillars of the Earth Charter and sub-badges that Pamela and others in this committee have been developing. These badges will be made available as graphics for members that can be used to create badges and probably a new store will be created where members can order 'buttons' and 'stickers' of the new designs.
We start with the 4 Pillars of the Earth Charter and add new categories and sub-badges as we want - the 4 Pillars are:
Respect and care for the Community of LIfe
Social & Economic Justice
Democracy & Peace
The old badges that ECUS created combined Respect and care for the Community of Life and Ecological Integrity into a 'Repect for Nature' badge. They separated Social & Economic Justice into 'Human Rights' and 'Economic Justice'. And they separated Democracy & Peace into 'Participatory Democracy' and 'Peace & Non-Violence'.
We think it would be best to have the 4 Pillars be the main categories and then develop more specific sub-badges that allow for members to add as many different kinds of activities as we can imagine. For example here are the related principles that fall under the Respect and care for the Community of Life:
1. Respect Earth and life in all its diversity.
a. Recognize that all beings are interdependent and every form of life has value regardless of its worth to human beings.
THIS COULD BE AN 'INTERDEPENDENCE' BADGE EARNED THROUGH ACTIVITIES LIKE STUDYING FOR YOUNG ONES DOING CRAFTS OR ART THAT SHOWS HOW LIFE IS INTERWOVEN, WITH OLDER CHILDREN HOLDING AN INTERDEPENDENCE DAY EVENT OR WRITING A STORY/POEM ABOUT INTERDEPENDENCE...ECT ECT
b. Affirm faith in the inherent dignity of all human beings and in the intellectual, artistic, ethical, and spiritual potential of humanity.
THIS COULD BE A 'DIGNITY' BADGE EARNED THROUGH LEARNING WHAT DIGNITY MEANS AND DOING SOME KIND OF AN ART OR STORY ABOUT IT...
2. Care for the community of life with understanding, compassion, and love.
a. Accept that with the right to own, manage, and use natural resources comes the duty to prevent environmental harm and to protect the rights of people.
THIS COULD HAVE AN 'EARTH STEWARD' BADGE AND 'SUSTAINABILITY BADGE' WITH TONS OF IDEAS FOR ACTIVITIES BUILT AROUND IT....
b. Affirm that with increased freedom, knowledge, and power comes increased responsibility to promote the common good.
3. Build democratic societies that are just, participatory, sustainable, and peaceful.
a. Ensure that communities at all levels guarantee human rights and fundamental freedoms and provide everyone an opportunity to realize his or her full potential.
THIS COULD HAVE A 'CULTURAL CREATIVE' BADGE THAT IS EARNED BY CHILDREN IMAGINING A WORLD LIKE THIS AND DOING AN ART OR WRITTEN PROJECT AROUND IT...CULTIVATE VISION AND IDEALISM
b. Promote social and economic justice, enabling all to achieve a secure and meaningful livelihood that is ecologically responsible.
THIS COULD HAVE A 'HUMAN RIGHTS ADVOCATE' BADGE...
4. Secure Earth's bounty and beauty for present and future generations.
a. Recognize that the freedom of action of each generation is qualified by the needs of future generations.
THIS COULD HAVE A ' 7 GENERATIONS' BADGE EARNED THROUGH LEARNING THIS CONCEPT THROUGH STORYTELLING, ART, ACTIVITIES RELATED TO CAUSE & EFFECT THROUGH TIME....
b. Transmit to future generations values, traditions, and institutions that support the long-term flourishing of Earth's human and ecological communities.
THIS FITS INTO THE ABOVE ' 7 GENERATIONS' BADGE CONCEPT AS WELL
In order to fulfill these four broad commitments, it is necessary to:
From there it moves into Ecological Integrity etc etc...
It is really easy once you start to read the charter to imagine how many possible badges can be created under just the 4 pillars and it would also be a good idea to have a 'sustainable living' category where children can earn badges from learning green building, organic gardening, permaculture principles, alternative and renewable energy/fuels, ecovillage development, and many other subjects that can be real 'hands on'.
Also if we are going to expand things to be 'all ages' then we can have a real fun time designing certificates for teens and adults!
We are going to put out a call to members of this community who are artists and graphic designers who may enjoy helping to create the images for the new badges and we also have those skills to contribute.
And yes - the manual will be a compilation of what folks have already been doing and ideas that are still in the hopper - we will start a 'Handbook Development' group so that everything is easily organized.
