Trip to Dolly Sods at Monongahela National Forest.

August 20, 2011 from 10am to 5pm
August 20, 2011 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM Monongahela Forest (Dolly Sods). The Monongahela National Forest was established in 1920. Located in the north central highlands of West Virginia, the Monongahela straddles the highest ridges in the State. Elevation ranges from just under 1000' to 4863' above sea level.  Variations in terrain and precipitation have created one of the most ecologically diverse National Forests in the country.See More

Activiites this summer

So far we have  GPS activity planned and 3 hikes. I would also like to go to Paw Par Tunnel and Green Ridge State Forest. If you have any ideas please let me know.

Maing a Wreath out of natural materials

Making a wreath with natural materials that can be found in the backyard will be a great craft activity for children of all ages. The end result will be a unique wreath that can be displayed on the front door or given as a gift to friends and family.

Indoor worm composting

Composting is easier than you think. I know most of you are worried about worms in the house and the odor of compost heaps. However, it is possible to set aside a comfortable, odor-free place in your house for red worms! In a proper compost container, red worms will just do what they are best at: eat scraps and “release” a wonderful compost that can be used for planting trees and spring! Items to Look for During  Nature Hunt (can add your own list):

  • acorns
  • caterpillars
  • ants
  • dandelions
  • sprouting tulips
  • y-shaped twigs
  • oak, maple, or hickory leaves, or whatever types may be found in the yard
  • blooming ground cover
  • bird feathers
  • moss
  • animal tracks
  • pussy willows
